Last night I attended and presented at the City Council meeting dealing specifically with the proposed Multiplex for Cambridge. As you have no doubt read there has been some concern raised by the community regarding the process used to decide on the currently proposed location of Conestoga College.
Concerns were heard last night during a very lengthy meeting, .
The outcome was that council did vote positively on the concept design for the facilities within the building.
Which will contain two Ice pads initially with an option to later add two more. A three tank aqua centre including a ten lane 25m competition pool There will also be three Gymnasiums and a four lane running track. There will also be room allocated for the Sports Hall of Fame and three activity rooms that will be available for meetings and fitness activities that do do require Gym size space. I am very happy that the city has listened to our presentations and reacted positively to our requests.
A special thanks to Ron Campbell (Aquajets) and Paul Langan (Scorpions Volleyball) who were very instrumental in persuading council of the need for competition swimming facilities and extra Gym space for Volleyball.
The decision regarding the location has been delayed until September until an independent organization (Deloitte) can assess all possible locations being suggested, comparing costs for each. Findings will be made to the public in early September with a final vote taking place at the end of that month.
I believe the progress made last night was very positive and has brought the Multiplex closer to reality. However there will be an overriding budget limitation so the facilities may need to be modified if another location is eventually chosen at a greater cost than the $2.5m currently in the plan with Conestoga. There is only one pot of money to be shared with land acquisition and sports facilities requirements.
I have been very proud to act as spokesperson for Active Cambridge am very happy that we have been seen as a very credible organization and worth listening to. Thank you all for your support.
As I have not heard back from everyone regarding your personal feelings on the Multiplex project. I have prefixed my public comments with a statement that although I represent a large group of sports and fitness groups in Cambridge some of my comments are personal views.
Always happy to hear your thoughts or comments. Very Best regards Alex
After 40 years in the corporate world I happily accepted the post of Active Cambridge Activator a couple of years ago. As a personal trainer I felt I could bring some incite and enthusiasm to a subject that I feel very passionate about, physical and mental well being.
