On the 12th November three members of the A/C board of Directors and I attended the presentation of the proposed Sports Multiplex. The presentation that followed was full of exciting possibilities, some solid creativity and some disappointments.
First the exciting stuff, seeing conceptual pictures of what will be a reality by 2018 was brilliant. We are still at the concept stage but the centre seemed that much closer and real. The Steering committee have listened, to a large extent, to public input. We will have an awesome aqua centre with three tanks. One 25m pool built to competition standards with observer viewing and two smaller pools at warmer temperatures for the recreational soakers.
We will have a four lane running track capable of handling runners and walkers all at the same time.
We could have up to four icepads, two Gym spaces and several other general purpose facility rooms. This complex will also become the permanent home of the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame which honours and celebrates the great athletic achievers that Cambridge has produced.
Pretty great so far so what's missing ?. A/C has lobbied for a 50m pool and one Olympic sized Ice pad so that both the pool and Ice will offer more flexibility in what it can offer sports groups in our great community. for example A 50m Pool could also be used by the local dive club, synchronized swimming and water polo.
An Olympic sized Ice pad could not only give our rep hockey players the chance to practice on the larger ice but also host Short track speed skating and figure skating.
Unfortunately the groups that would get the most use out of these extra facilities have not formally approached the steering committee and made their needs known. This has left the decision makers feeling that the investment might not get enough use. So its now up to these groups to make their needs known before concept becomes reality. So to this groups .... its now up to you
Similarly A/C strongly believes that the Gym space being suggested is way to little. Big users like the Volleyball community and basketball could gobble up this space on their own and still need more. Add to that the many smaller clubs that need affordable gym space each week. Once again the Steering committee need to hear from you very soon. There are options to include much more Gym space but it will require these groups to step up and make their case known and soon.
As the Active Cambridge Activator and having the experience of presenting to the Steering Committee several times I would be happy to work with any group that wants to approach these folks and present their case. Please don't wait "Times a wasting" Best Regards Alex
After 40 years in the corporate world I happily accepted the post of Active Cambridge Activator a couple of years ago. As a personal trainer I felt I could bring some incite and enthusiasm to a subject that I feel very passionate about, physical and mental well being.
